“How about here?  We haven’t done any pictures right here.  Oh wow that’s bright, I’m looking right into the sun.  110 degrees sure is hot, too.  If I lean on this apartment building, will I project a sense of casual refinement?  What if I squint from the sun, maybe look a bit more uncomfortable in the heat?  Yeah?  How’s this working? ”

What I Wore to Work Today: Mon, July 12

Shirt: Ross
Pants: Old Navy
Shoes: Ross

I was planning to go to CrossFit directly from work, then I signed up for Mon/Wed tennis lessons starting the same day.  In the morning I had thought “Ew, this shirt doesn’t work with these pants like I had imagined, good thing I’m changing into workout clothes and won’t be taking a picture!”  Then when I didn’t go to CrossFit after all I decided to add it to the WIWTWT file anyway, to remind myself why I don’t want to wear this again, and for authenticity and all that.

I tried frolicking through the sprinklers for the picture, which didn’t turn out at all.  It was too dark for the photo and I was too close to the head of the sprinklers so all I ended up with was wet pant legs.

What I Wore to Work Today: July 8 refashion

Shirt and skirt: Goodwill
Shoes: Shoe Pavilion?
Necklace: Claire’s

The shirt is a minor refashion from Goodwill.  It had little pockets on it that I thought were too small and placed weirdly high — “Hey, let’s put these pockets up on the collarbone, it’s the perfect design!” — so I unpicked them.  The marks they left disappeared after a trip through the laundry and some ironing.

Bar stools refashion

Before                                                                  After

I updated two tall bar chairs with blue fabric.  I got the chairs, along with a tall bistro table that is still at my old house until I transport it to the apartment, free from a friend’s mother a couple years ago when she was downsizing.  I’ve never been super keen on the stripey seat covers and finally got around to changing them, which took half an hour with the aid of a screwdriver, some packing tape, and a drill.

I was surprised to find that I didn’t have as much fabric in my stash as I expected that would fit two chairs.  I chose the blue Galaxy print for now.  The previous person had added the striped material using duct tape, and I did my reupholstering with packing tape because it’s what I had on hand.

What I Wore to Work Today: Wed, July 7

Top and shoes: Ross
Pants: some mall store
Belt: Target
Glasses: Lenscrafters

Look, Mom, I do repeat outfits.

I choose my work clothes based on many factors: what’s clean, what I wore recently, how long it’s been since I shaved my legs, how much it feels like I’ll want to sit cross-legged (aka Indian style) at my desk,…  That last one is something that one of my brothers does, too, folding up his legs as he works at the computer — and he’s six feet tall, so it’s not just my petite frame that leads to the comfortable cross-legged posture, it’s a genetic quirk of our hip joints or something.  Last night I decided on a skirt with a new Goodwill shirt, and then this morning not only did I hit snooze too many times to iron the top but I also knew I’d have a hard time keeping my feet on the floor all day.  Until I have a private office with a desk that has a wooden front, obscuring view of under my desk, I’m going to have to limit the cross-leggedness to days when I’m wearing pants.

What I Wore to Work Today: Fri, July 2

Jacket: Goodwill
Tank top: Old Navy
Jeans:Ross
Sneakers: Payless

These pictures are the first from the morning before work — without make-up and looking a little out of it, since it’s not even 8 a.m. — and the first one inside my apartment.  The artwork on the wall is a drawing my oldest brother made of his dog when he was 13.  He left it behind when he joined the Navy, and I really like having it in my home.  The large portrait of Kalayna is also in the living room; the two pieces work well together.

What I Wore to Work Today: June 30

Purple cardigan & t-shirt: Target
Pinstripe skirt: Goodwill
Wedges: Payless

I got multiple compliments on my new shoes, which I like a whole lot.  When I bought them I thought I’d remove the flower, and now I think I”ll keep them as is.  When I was in New York for the wedding I got my first actual pedicure to go along with my third ever manicure.  I enjoyed it and liked the results, so maybe I’ll start going into the occasional nail salon.  I’m a sophisticated lady now!

What I Wore to Work Today: June 29

Cardigan and skirt: Goodwill
Tank top: Target
Wedges:Payless

I was a bridesmaid in a college friend’s wedding last week in Rye, New York.  Our dresses were strapless empire waist floor-length navy blue chiffon, and she requested we wear silver shoes.  I already owned a pair of silver dressy shoes that I had only worn once or twice, and I still decided to buy another pair.  I ended up with a dark gunmetal silver/pewter pair, and three other pairs of shoes from Payless.  I haven’t purchased four pairs at once before, and it was $78 for these together, which isn’t bad at all, especially since my shoe wardrobe needed updating.  I don’t wear leather, which makes shoe-shopping cheaper.

While I didn’t buy any of this outfit from Target, the Goodwill skirt is a Target brand, so it probably counts.  The skirt and cardigan were from a Goodwill trip during the last 50% Off Saturday sale.  I also bought a stack of shorts that I’ll refashion to fit me soon.
