New pants, 2 years later

What I Wore to Work Today: Nov. 16
Top: Ross
Pants: Ross
Shoes: Payless

I bought these pants somewhere between 1 and 2 years ago and didn’t wear them until this week.  They needed to be hemmed shorter, which I finally did while watching “Glee”, removing the cuff I didn’t like at the same time.  A chocolate brown color, not black like they appear in these photos, they’ll pump up my pants category which has been pretty slim of late.

Maggie’s Place baby quilt #5

This woman said she liked pink, purple, blue, and green and asked for Winnie the Pooh if it all possible.  In real life the green is a much cleaner, brighter lime green than it’s reading in the pictures.  I like the purple paisley binding with one piece of pink.

A belated bridesmaid picture, plus the shoes again

What I Wore to Work Today: Mon, Nov 15
Cardigan: Target (but an older one I don’t wear as much because it’s faded)
Drapey top: Target
Skirt: Target
Shoes: Payless, purchased for being a bridesmaid (see below)

Conveniently enough, the style of dress the bride had chosen for us months ahead of time easily accommodated our other college friend’s growing belly.  (She was getting married a month later too, I guess late 20s is a common time for weddings and babies!)  It was a beautiful June wedding and it was wonderful to see how happy the newlyweds were together.  She deserves nothing but the best and I was touched to see them together.

What I Wore to Ikea This Weekend

What I Wore to Ikea Today: Sun, Nov 14
Top: Goodwill
Jeans: Goodwill
Plaid wedges: Target
Sunglasses: Target

I went to Ikea on Sunday with several friends.  It was time to reset the place for me emotionally — the previous trips had been: 1) the day I was moving into my new apartment after a years-long relationship had ended and I was leaving our house; 2) a happy visit as one of those new couples drifting through the showrooms hand-in-hand occasionally stopping to kiss next to a Kramfors ottoman while dreaming of their future homes together; and 3) killing time one afternoon in Portland the week after our apartment was suddenly just mine.

So this was just a trip with pals, helping a friend upgrade her bedroom to reflect the 30-year-old academic professional she is.  3 hours later, I walked out with a pack of 10 kitchen towels and a gentle sense of wistfulness.

These boots were made for walking

What I Wore to Work Today: Fri, Nov 12
Jacket: Goodwill
Jeans: Goodwill
V-neck shirt: Target
Belt: Gift from Sarah
Boots: Target
Necklace: Claire’s

I bought these boots at Target 7 years ago and I can (or should) only wear them under pants now.  They’re falling apart, the heels are worn down to the hard plastic innards, pieces of the plastic-y coating are coming off in chunks too large for mere permanent marker to cover up.  I’ve been looking for another pair of knee-high, non-leather, stacked heel, non-pointy toe black boots for almost two years now and nothing has met my apparently high standards.  Now that it’s cold enough to wear boots occasionally I’d like another pair.

A couple weekends ago I wore them with a black tank top and black sequined skirt that I refashioned (I forgot to take pictures, I’ll recreate the outfit sometime for documentation), and it was fine because it was at a dimly-lit bar.  These boots were made for walking, and now they can longer do so in a professional office environment, or where there’s plenty of daylight for getting a good gander at them.

I work hard for the money

What I Wore to Work Today: Wed, Nov 10
Shirt and tank top: Goodwill
Skirt: Gift from my friend Sarah
Belt: Gift from my friend Sarah
Shoes: Shoe Pavilion
Necklace: Claire’s

I received compliments on this outfit from 3 people before 10 o’clock, so another winner from my midwestern friend.  The skirt is a super light, fluid rayon with a filmy polyester chiffon-type lining.  It’s so light that it feels like wearing nothing, which is a disconcerting feeling at the office.  I’d be walking to the break room and have an irrational panicky moment that I forgot to put on pants and now I’m at work, completely pantsless!  Or wonder how something so light could possibly be opaque, even though I had already checked it to make sure it wasn’t sheer in natural or artificial light.  Still, I think I’m going to buy or make a slip to wear next time to put my mind at ease.  Add “slip” to the list of items I now consider reasonable that once seemed mired in what my 1988 child brain thought of as The Pinnacle of Womanliness: “blouse”, “nylons”, “rouge”,…

Purpley-gray is a great color

What I Wore to Work Today: Tues, Nov 9
Cardigan: Target
Sleeveless top: Gift from my friend Sarah (Gap)
Belt: Gift from my friend Sarah
Skit: Goodwill, hemmed shorter
Shoes: Shoe Pavilion

I’ve been having so much fun trotting out my new pieces from The Mother Lode.  I expect that this dusky indigo top with a lovely drape will see a lot of time at the office — next time it will be tucked in, and the time after that under a jacket.  It can also be worn with jeans and heels for a night out.  It reads like a slate gray in the pictures, although in real life it has a more blueish-purple hue.

Stack o’ baby quilts: Maggie’s Place #4

I have three lovely baby quilts resting on a chair in my living room, waiting for delivery.  (Ha, delivery, get it?  Delivery of baby quilts!)  Two are for women at Maggie’s Place, an organization that provides housing, resources, and support for women who are pregnant and often homeless.  I have trouble with their value “Protecting the life of the born and unborn child and providing options for women that choose to give life” because of the “unborn child” and “give life” parts — I firmly believe in the rights of all women to make decisions regarding their bodies, their lives, and their medical procedures, including abortion.  So for now I focus on the options for women who have already chosen, and hope that they truly had a choice.

I designed the quilts for the specific recipients’ preferences.  One problem: their babies were due in December 2009 and January 2010.  Um, yeah, not such a great job there, self.  The alumni coordinator has contact info for one of the mothers and the other has lost touch, so unfortunately she won’t receive her quilt with brown, blue, yellow, and baby prints as requested.  Somebody else will get it, though, somebody who hopefully likes the same things and will squeal with delight when she sees the baby duckies on the soft flannel back because I guess some people are into that kind of cutesy thing.

I’ll do better next time.  I can’t change the past, I can only change my actions in the present and decisions in the future using the knowledge I’ve gained from my mistakes in the past.  This message brought to you by regret, hope, the number 2, and the letter B.

Blue & white skirt refashion

What I Wore to Work Today: Mon, Nov 8
Cardigan: Target
Tank top: Goodwill
Skirt: Refashioned from a gift
Wedges: Payless

Before                                                                       After

My friend Sarah included this skirt in one of the 13 mother lode packages for my birthday.  She said somebody gave it to her and it was too big so I should “refashion the hell out of it”, although I didn’t do anything drastic.  I made it smaller and raised the hem, losing access to one of the neat pockets in the refashion process. If I tire of this primly proper length I’ll make it shorter and show some thigh.  Hot diggity!

I look pretty good in these pictures, considering that I had just come home from work at noon and was about to sleep away the rest of the day buried under a migraine.

Art gallery, dinner, then the weekend

What I Wore to Work Today: Thu, Nov 4
Cardigan: Target
Tank top: Old Navy
Skirt: Target
Wedges: Payless

I wore this to an art gallery to see grad student show called Small Metals, Big Ideas, and then I went to dinner with one of the artists.  Sure, it was Chipotle, which doesn’t make the evening any less sophisticated.  Remember the part about how it was for the opening of a show at an art gallery?  Pure class, baby, pure class.  Also, I let him pay for my burrito bowl, which I’m pretty sure makes it a date.

And because I’ve gotten a week behind with the posting, here’s the next day’s entry as well.

What I Wore to Work Today: Fri, Nov 5
Cardigan: Gift from my friend S.
Tank top: Old Navy
Jeans: Ross
Sneakers: Payless

I ended up wearing the cardigan halfway buttoned most of the day, although didn’t get back outside to document it.
