I scheduled Friday off for a weekend in the mountains, making Thursday the last day of my work week, and then I left an hour early too. The weather report says the lows will be in the 20s and the highs around 50. I’m leaving in a couple hours as I type (this post is written on Friday and scheduled to publish on Saturday) and I haven’t packed. What does winter feel like again? What’s a reasonable outfit for possible snow? I’ve been in snow once in the last 7 years. When I move away from here in the next year or two, I’d like to go someplace with real seasons, with snow in the winter and double-digit highs in the summer. There are some good options that don’t meet those criteria — Portland, San Francisco, D.C., Austin — so maybe I won’t live in a snowy winter after all. I signed a lease through the end of June, so I have until then at the earliest to make a decision.
I have two hours to make a decision for packing for the weekend. Right now this is my list: winter coat with scarf and gloves, flannel pajama pants I’m wearing now, swimsuit. There’s an outdoor hot tub at the vacation house, for that exquisite mix of hot and cold under the stars. What else do I need?
