Refashioned navy floral dress

I refashioned my first $1 Day Goodwill dress and wore it last night when going out with friends.  I don’t know the starting size more specifically than Too Big because it was handmade.

What I Wore to Work Today, and Then After Work

What I Wore to Work Today: Thu, Dec 16
Cardigan: Gift from my friend Sarah
Tank Top: Old Navy
Skirt: Target
Belt: Xi, came with a shirt
Shoes: Target
Necklace: Claire’s

I ate lunch at my desk, and then later went for a run during part of my hour break.  It felt harder than previous runs, and also amazing.  Exercise is always a good idea, I don’t think I’ve ever felt worse afterward.  I’ve never regretted it.  I’m going to do it again during lunch next week, this time bringing my new dry shampoo to freshen my hair in its post-run ponytail.  Oh!  I’ll buy myself a combination lock to claim a spot in the little locker room and leave some supplies there!  Now that I have two pairs of running shoes, I can leave one set at work with some workout clothes so that I can get some midday exercise at a moment’s notice, even if it’s just for a walk.

After work my apartment was chilly so I added SpongeBob pajama pants under my skirt, not wanting to change completely because I might be going out again.  Still cold, so I put on socks.  And then my puffy green vest.

Pajama pants: Gift from my mom several years ago
Vest: Goodwill
Socks: Target

The occasional jacket

What I Wore to Work Today: Wed, Dec 15
Cardigan: Target
Tank Top: Old Navy
Jacket: Old Navy, trimmed down by me
Skirt: Gift from Sarah
Belt: Gift from Sarah
Shoes: Shoe Pavilion
Necklace: Claire’s

I wore a jacket for the first few hours because it was chilly and I didn’t remove my “winter coat” when I got to my desk.  So far this season this jacket has been my primary outerwear.  Because that’s the way we roll here — a record high of 82 degrees earlier in the week and back to regular highs hovering just below 70.  Sure, this is awesome, and let’s talk again about how awesome it is in the middle of July.

Once again I felt like I forgot to put on pants because the skirt is so light and short — I found myself checking every time I got up to make sure my skirt was covering my rear because I couldn’t feel it.  I recently bought a slip from Goodwill and just need to shorten it, which hasn’t happened yet because I want to save the lacy hem so instead need to remove length from the top instead of bottom.

Hanukkah gift quilt

This was the 4th year giving one of my friends 8 Hanukkah presents, one for each day.  Previously they’d been mostly gag gifts, like multiple Nick Lachey buttons and old Halloween candy, and this year they were all items of a more genuine nature.  The finale was a quilt to go with her newly upgraded room, in her colors of white, black, and yellow.  The first gift was a set of yellow curtains, which I wrapped up as a present even though I was with her when she bought the material at Ikea and I said I’d hem them for her.

The difference a weekend makes

What I Wore to Work Today: Mon, Dec 13
Cardigan: Target
Tshirt: Old Navy
Pants: Ross
Shoes: Payless

Hey, remember that beautiful vibrant flame-colored tree outside my office building?  Yeah, me too.   Let’s reminisce for a moment about Friday.  That was a good day.  Then the weekend happened, and by Monday the leaves had fallen, carpeting the ground beneath the branches.  We didn’t even have a storm or wind or anything.

What’s that you say, you don’t see any leaves on the ground in that first picture taken in the early afternoon?  Let’s wax nostalgic once more, this time about just a few hours earlier on Monday, when the leaves were carpeting the ground beneath the branches, before the landscape team came and carted them away to the great big leaf pile in the sky, on a farm with lots of other leaf piles to play with, where it will be happy.  The orange tree was a good background while it lasted.

“Do you need a picture?”

What I Wore to Work Today: Fri, Dec 10
Jacket: Charlotte Russe
Tank top: Old Navy
Jeans: Ross
Sneakers: Payless

The woman in the background slowed as she walked past to the car waiting with her lunch date, curious to see why I was apparently posing for pictures for 10 seconds outside our office, then called out as I went to the camera to see the results, “Do you need a picture?”  I replied, “I’m doing a project that works with the self-timer shots, thanks though!”  Maybe tomorrow I’ll try harder to allow a couple minutes for photos before work, if there’s enough light on the balcony that early in the morning.

Tarantino costume party

A friend had a housewarming party this weekend with a Quentin Tarantino: come as a character from a Tarantino movie.  I dressed as Bear Jew from “Inglourious Basterds”, even though I haven’t seen the movie, because I wanted something simple and cheap.  I only needed to buy the pants from Goodwill and tweak them a bit.  I didn’t take a before picture, so just imagine them too big for me around the waist and hips.

I made the suspenders out of pieces of a graduation gown and safety-pinned them to my pants.  I didn’t check the reference picture again until I was already done, at which point I realized they’re supposed to be tan suspenders instead of black.  The Nazi dog tag trophies are chocolate coins from a Hanukkah party, taped to more strips of commencement gown.  The Nazi-killin’ bat is an empty wrapping paper tube, and I wore my ratty old boots and reversible black/brown belt.

Total cost: $5.99 and 25 minutes.

I also helped a friend with her costume as Gogo from “Kill Bill”, shortening a Goodwill skirt and lending her socks, a button-down shirt, and a necktie.  The broken zipper is held together with safety pins for now, and I’ll add snaps before she puts it in her costume bin.

Lunch with a VP

What I Wore to Work Today: Thu, Dec 9
Cardigan: Target
Tank top: Old Navy
Skirt: Gift from friend, refashioned
Shoes: Target
Compliments: Two

This skirt also has a deep pocket that proved useful today.  The senior VP of operations in my business unit (my boss’s boss’s boss) took a small group of people out to lunch, including me, to discuss the new women’s employee resource network we’re developing.  I put my ID in my pocket and left my purse behind.

I tried out a new spot outside the office for self-timed pictures.  It didn’t work out so well, as you can see below.  Maybe if I zoom in the lens and try a different time of day when it’s not in the shadow of the building light…

Plaid skirt refashion, and new boots!

What I Wore to Work Today: Thur, Dec 8
Cardigan: Target
Belt: Xi, came with a shirt
Skirt: Goodwill, refashioned
Boots: Famous Footwear

I debuted my new boots and received several compliments on them, as well as on the skirt I made the night before.  We had our office “holiday reception” in the afternoon and I debated whether or not the plaid skirt + knee-high black boots combo was too Sexy Schoolgirl for work, especially when I’d be making chit-chat with some higher-ups in our business line.  I’m glad I decided to go with it — I felt confident and comfortable all day.  And I used the deep pocket to hold my badge so I could leave my stuff in my cubicle and head across the parking lot to the hotel reception space without a purse.

I like this outfit so much that I’m scheduling a 2nd post in one day.
