The Pink Thing
What I Wore to Work Today: Wednesday, September 28, 2011
Blouse: Goodwill
Skirt: Goodwill, shortened
Belt: Xi, came with a blouse
Shoes: Target
Necklace: Claire’s
I went shopping at Goodwill’s half off Saturday sale and came across an eye-poppingly bright pink synthetic blouse that buttoned up the back, had a row of tiny tuxedo-like pleats down the front, and sported giant shoulder pads. “Ha ha, check this out!” I said and tried it on for humor value. Except then I kinda liked it. At the end of the shopping trip we each went through our piles to sort out the pieces that made the final cut.
“I’m getting the pink thing,” I announced, as we had started calling it, “and not as a costume.”
She shook her head. “I cannot get behind that decision. Don’t ask me to support you”.
A week later I took out the shoulder pads and wore it to work, receiving more than one compliment. (Two is more than one!) I sent my friend an email with the pictures, asking “Still not behind my decision?”
“That… is amazing.” I don’t know if she meant amazing how it turned out to be a fine office outfit after her resistance, just fine, or if she meant amazing that I would wear it on purpose, in a professional setting, where people could see me.
