Back to school
What I Wore to Work Today: Wednesday, October 12, 2011
Tshirt: Hand-me-down from a friend
Skirt: Goodwill, shortened
Earrings: Fundraiser garage sale at work (if my 50 cents won’t turn this community around, nothing will!)
I started school again last week, taking two online classes through a local community college: Advanced Excel for officey stuff and calculus as a prerequisite for economics graduate school applications. I decided to go with the accelerated option for both, taking them over 8 weeks instead of the standard 14. How hard could it be, right? I have all this wasted time on the internet and watching tv and generally porking around, and all I’d need to do is fill some book-learnin’ in those time slots and I’d be golden.
Turns out being a full time student on top of my regular cubicle slave job is going to be harder than I thought. The 24 hours per week estimate on the calculus syllabus seems reasonable; at least Excel should be only 6-8 instead of the stated 15. I’ve already dug myself a hole by finishing the math chapter 2 assignments and quiz a full day late.
It’s fun so far, though. I spent four hours on Saturday night immersed in functions, trying to get at least one chapter in before the deadline. I’d look up and another 45 minutes had gone by without a whisper. I stopped at midnight to give some friends a ride home from a party.
“We missed you, where you been all night?” party guests asked when I walked in at 12:30.
Doing math! Wheeeee!
