This blouse appeals to me in real life, a lovely pistachio-mint color that apparently is on-trend right now. I felt ok wearing this outfit — not great, not bad. I’m going to take in the sides to see if it becomes more flattering and maybe do something to the bottom (it has a wide row of elastic shirring at the bottom you can’t see when it’s tucked in). If nothing improves, I’ll continue to wear it once in awhile knowing full well it does me no favors.
Oh hello, what’s this? A dress that I halfheartedly refashioned last year and never wore? Why is it taking up space? Wear it or move on!
Turns out it’s a fun little dress and just needed to be taken in a little more on the sides under the arms. Worth the dollar it cost me, even if that was in 2011 dollars. Gotta consider inflation, you know.

Blouse: Mall store I don’t remember
Pants: Goodwill, $1 Thursday
This past weekend was really productive. I did the dishes, I took out the garbage, I planted flowers and basil, I cooked food to last me through Wednesday, I swept the patio, I powered through the mending & refashioning pile, I evened exercised a little (ok, so only 20 minutes on the elliptical, which is still better than zero minutes on the elliptical).
This blouse periodically goes into hibernation, when yet another button falls off or a plastic diamond piece separates from its metal button anchor in the washing machine. It hangs in the Pending closet, forgotten, until I find it and take 15 minutes to replace any missing buttons yet again. And then it’s like I have a new blouse!
I haven’t actually done any refashioning to these clothes, and I’m tagging it “completed project” because of how many times I’ve re-sewed the buttons.
I’m the 30-year-old equivalent of a toddler who gets really excited when you give them a “new” toy to play with that has actually just been put away on a top shelf for a few months while other toys are in rotation.

Shirt: Goodwill, half-off Saturday
Skirt: Goodwill, shortened
I went to 50% off day at Goodwill with my primary shopping friend last week. She is spending a month in Israel and needed a couple pieces of clothing to wear when visiting the orthodox neighborhoods (calf-length-or-longer skirts, shirts that covered her elbows and her collarbone). She found what she needed and I came across this shirt discarded in the pants section. It delighted me.
“Um, ok…” she said when she came back to see me buttoning it over my tshirt in front of the mirror.
“I think I can make it my size without any trouble. It will be a great shirt when it’s like this,” I gestured as I gathered the fabric in one hand behind my back.
“I should believe you by now, I don’t know how you do it but you’re right, I’m sure that will end up being a totally reasonable thing to wear.”
“…to the office! A totally reasonable thing to wear on the weekend and to the office!” I added.
“Um. Well. Ok. I’m glad you like it, anyway”.
Who’s wearing it to the office now??

Skirt, Belt, Shoes: Target
I bought a white button-down shirt at Goodwill because I finally realized that if I didn’t feel good the first five times wearing the white button-down shirt that I already had, I should just get rid of it instead of clinging to false hope for a better sixth time. I’ve since put the old shirt in the giveaway pile and taken in the sides of the new one to improve its chances of making it into regular rotation. If I don’t feel great by the 3rd wearing, it’s out the door and I’ll keep looking. I’d rather feel good in a black cardigan all the time than feel fidgety and unattractive in a button-down that doesn’t quite work for me.

Dress: Goodwill, refashioned
Shoes: 5th Circle of Hell
These shoes are not comfortable and it was quite unexpected. They’re nice reasonable wedges and a size 7.5 when 7 is my more usual size (and the occasional 6.5) and yet somehow they pinch my feet and dig in leaving marks and generally do not feel good. I will give them another chance or two in case I was, I dunno, have a fat foot day or something. And then they will be given away in case they don’t hurt someone else’s feet and I will go back to searching for the perfect pair of cherry red shoes.
And nude heels, too, I’ve been searching for a dressy pair of fleshy colored shoes for awhile now (“searching for” = “glancing at the shoe department once in awhile”) and I think I’m being hindered by wanting a pair that can go to work and dress up all fancy-like.
This shot was captured when my across-the-way neighbor turned around on his balcony midday Sunday and saw me posing for the self-timer in my church outfit. He pretended not to see and immediately turned back around. Later when I was out there potting flowers in my planter (such a productive weekend!) his girlfriend and I made eye contact and she, too, looked away without acknowledging me.
I can see why somebody might do that — we’re on our personal balconies and saying hello (or doing an awkward half-wave, ahem) means momentarily dropping the charade of privacy, acknowledging that not only can others see into our space but also that we were looking into theirs.
I wore this dress to a friend’s housewarming party last night and received several compliments. I wore a lacy slip to provide a sense of secure coverage under the very lightweight skirt.
“Dear Universe, I would like an easy dress to refashion, can you make that happen for me when I’m shopping at Goodwill’s $1 Thursday tonight?” I said last month.
“Sure thing, how about this one?” came the reply.
People seem unconvinced when I say that the Universe or God or Whatever has been making its presence known to me for the past 18 months. Doesn’t it seem egotistical to think that God would show up in such silly, inconsequential manners like providing you with a piece of clothing, they imply.
Well, the way I see it, this Universe/God/Whatever is infinitely small in addition to infinitely large, and can be there for the miniscule and the great.

Tank Top: Old Navy
Pants: Goodwill, tailored
I tailored these pants last summer to fit me in an appropriate fashion. Then I went on to lose 8 pounds over the next six months and the fit stopped being what I intended. Mentally adding the pants to the To Be Fixed pile but not actually moving them to the physical pile, apparently the plan is to keep wearing them.
If I can’t bring myself to do the dishes — they’ve been in the sink for 6 days now and I’ve been draining and refilling the water each day because “tonight’s the night I actually do this!” — then what’s the likelihood I’ll make changes to a pair of trousers that are more or less the right size?

Belt: Xi, came with a blouse
Does this dress fit in the category of Animal Print, or is it more Abstract? It’s sort of like leopard or zebra or feathers or husky fur.
