What I Wore to Work Today: Wednesday, September 26, 2012
Dress: Target, new
Shoes: Payless

Yes, that’s right, it is just like a different dress I own, and you’re astute to notice it. I bought this dress in another color because I like it a lot and it was 75% off during my last Target trip.

Yes, I look un-enthused, because it’s morning. The world’s journey around the sun continues and it’s getting pretty dark to take pictures on my east-facing balcony when I get home from work, and the morning sun spot is shifting behind the chimney across the way. Soon it will morning pictures, followed by day pictures outside of my office.

Life goes on.

Atmosphere show

What I Wore to a Show: Monday, September 24, 2012 Tank top: Goodwill Shorts: Goodwill, $1 Thursday refashioned Shoes: Target I wanted to wear something fun, not warm, and with pockets for ID and cash. I wanted shoes with a bit of a heel to help see the stage (5’2″ isn’t optimal height in a crowd), and comfortable enough to stand the entire night. I was pleased with my choice until the last hour, when my feet and lower back were weeping from the gently sloped concrete floor. You can tell I meant business with my “going out look” because I put on a bit of makeup. Didn’t do anything to my hair though — in the picture it’s still wet from the shower. Wash, brush, air dry. That’s my hair routine. Sometimes, if it’s bothering me, I pull it into a ponytail.

Ugh, mornings

What I Wore to Work Today: Tuesday, September 25, 2012
Tshirt: Target
Pants: Goodwill, $1 Thursday
Shoes: Payless

I have never been a morning person. As a teenager and in college people would say to me, “Oh, when you’re older you won’t be able to sleep late anymore, getting up early for work every day will tune your body clock and you’ll be lucky if you can sleep past 8:00.” This statement has not yet come true. I am 30 years old and have been working an office job for over 7 years. The best I can offer is that I rarely sleep until 2 p.m. anymore, and that once in awhile I do in fact naturally wake up on the weekend at 10:00, depending on what time I went to bed the night before and if I’m being asked, “Hey, are you still sleeping…? Do you want to get breakfast, like, pretty soon…?”

On Monday night I went out with a couple friends to see Atmosphere and a two opening acts also from the Minneapolis label Rhymesayers. Minnesota hip-hop represent!

Tuesday morning was even tougher than usual and I grabbed a tshirt and pants that I could wear with socks — my feet were tender from standing at the show on the sloped concrete floor. It was a two-coffee morning.

Closet organization time!

What I Wore to Work Today: Wednesday, September 19, 2012
Dress: Goodwill, refashioned
Cardigan: Target
Dress: Xi, came with a blouse
Shoes: Target

My 2-bedroom apartment has four closets: a small walk-in master bedroom closet, tiny hall closet, and two sliding-door closets in my sewing room. Currently my dresses are lined up together in a spectrum, with the swim cover-up at one end and my pretty-much-only-at-the-office dresses at the other. This leads to some muddled thinking in the middle.

The last documentation of this dress at the office was July 2011. I have a vague memory of feeling like it was too short for work, although it’d be great for all those theoretical cocktail parties that happen only in my mind.

This week I looked at it and said “If it’s not appropriate for work why is it next to the other work dresses, maybe I’m remembering it incorrectly?”  The picture looks fine, and it wasn’t a disaster, and it is to short for me to feel comfortable in the office, especially in the back.

Instead of relying on my own memory, I’m going to physically separate the office-ready dresses from the rest. I haven’t decided how to do this exactly — I do like seeing all of them at the same time when selecting attire for non-work occasions. I also like thinking about the different ways I could do it. Organization is fun!

Like pajama pants!

What I Wore to Work Today: Tuesday, September 18, 2012
Tshirt: Target
Trousers: Goodwill, $1 Thursday, new
Shoes: Payless

“These are so comfortable, like I’m wearing pajamas”, fashion bloggers sometimes say. I didn’t quite understand it, maybe because I usually sleep pants-free or maybe because they’re often referring to a jersey maxi-dress and the only thing nightgowns ever did for me was ride up during the night until they were gathered under my sleeping armpits.

These new pants, though, they totally do feel like pajama pants. They’re soft and pliable and loose and a little stretchy. They started out long enough for somebody much taller than I and are now hemmed to wear with heels.

Watching the time

What I Wore to Work Today: Tuesday, September 11, 2012
Dress: Ross
Belt: Xi, came with a blouse
Shoes: Payless
Watch: Target

Besides a short period this summer, I don’t usually wear a watch except on runs or while traveling. I wore a watch this day, however, because our group had a meeting in a conference room without a clock and I realized I’d like being able to know the time. I guess that’s often why people wear watches, huh, because they like being able to know the time.

Can Americans say “mumsy”?

What I Wore to Work Today: Thursday, September 6, 2012
Dress: Target, new
Shoes: Payless

The high today was 82 degrees, a full 20 degrees below normal. I spent the glorious weather inside, chained to my cubicle. And this evening I have only myself to blame. I spent it on the couch, gchatting with a newly-engaged friend about the frustrations involved in selecting a wedding venue suitable for 120-150 guests in their budget range, when they don’t live in the city and can’t visit prospective sites again and the various parents have opinions that conflict with each other and the engaged couple.

I’m going to shorten this dress just a couple inches. Even with the sleek high heels, I felt a bit dowdy. It overwhelmed my small frame.

Black & blue

What I Wore to Work Today: Wednesday, September 5, 2012
Cardigan: Target, new
Sequin tank top: Old Navy
Skirt: Goodwill, shortened
Shoes: Target

Q. What’s white & black & blue all over?
A. A nun falling down the stairs.

Q. What’s white & black & read all over?
A. The newspaper.

Man, those jokes take me back to elementary school. For starters, that first joke seems in poor taste, making mockery of a sister in the faith who was unfortunate enough to trip on the stairs. I mean, we’ve all been there, right? Also, the “I fell down the stairs” angle has its own implications.

I’m not clear on how to write the second joke. The hilarity comes from the red/read homophone pun, which works best when said aloud. Also, it’s clearly coming from a previous era. What’s a newspaper??
