Shirt: Goodwill, $1 Thursday refashioned
Turns out I didn’t take a Before picture of this new pink checked shirt. It was wider and otherwise the same, not a spectacular refashion, all I did was bring in the sides. Then again, it changed it from unwearable to pretty cute, so maybe I shouldn’t dismiss it. Good work, self, fine job seeing the potential and executing the necessary steps to get it there.

Belt: Random gift from my mom
I was rummaging through my closet last week trying to decide what to wear to a party where we drank cheap vodka for science and I came across this stretchy gold belt. My mother had sent to it me awhile ago, maybe even last year, and I had never worn it. I was surprised I hadn’t given it away already, actually. I tried it on and thought Huh, maybe I could make that work, and later I wore it to the office.
So about that party For Science. A friend needed assistance calibrating the dosages for his dissertation’s alcohol lab. His research focuses on the speed at which a person reaches peak blood alcohol content and how that rate correlates with different things. One example hypothesis: the faster BAC peaks and begins to fall again, the greater the risk of alcohol abuse.
Each subject was weighed and given a corresponding number of pretzels to eat as quickly as possible. (This part of Science wasn’t a ton of fun.) Then, we were given our alcohol dose to drink within 10 minutes, again based on weight/height/age/sex. Form there we were breathalyzed every 10 minutes until the BAC started to drop again (usually in the .04-.09 window, the Drinking For Science wasn’t a total bender or anything). Turns out the meters couldn’t handle the number of people — there wasn’t enough time for them to reset between readings — and started malfunctioning after awhile. Even though there wasn’t a much usable data for his research, it was a fun night.

Tank top: Goodwill
When I’m wearing this tank top in the car on a sunny day (read: 95% of days here), the sequins cast off little flecks of light like a disco ball. Yeah, my 2002 Buick is a party. A party, I’m telling you.

Jeans: Goodwill, hemmed
Nine people report to my manager at work, eight of us women. Half of the team own a bunch of the same tshirts from Target, and once in awhile we’ll end up wearing the exact same one. Last Friday I initially reached for a blue one, and then realized somebody else was probably going to wear it so grabbed last season’s maroon-y brown one instead. I was right. Office sartorial faux pas avoided!

I bought a little basil plant. At some point it will get planted in the large pot. I used passive voice there because, let’s face it, I don’t know when I’ll get around to it, and I want to create some distance between the potting of the basil and my own actions.

Cardigan, tank top, skirt, shoes: Target
I haven’t worn these earrings, which you can’t really see in the picture, in quite awhile. They’re a nice teal color that worked with the cobalt/navy/green thing. When I turned my head, sometimes I could hear a gentle tinkling or clinking at my ear. I wear earrings more often as my hair gets longer — I like them if I pull my hair into a ponytail, which sometimes happens during the day, especially if I’m wearing a collared shirt.

I worried that I had worn this dress or its sibling too recently, so I wore it with the black heels instead of the beige. Problem solved! As I walked to my cubicle in the morning a passerby said, “Ooh, looks like somebody went dress shopping!” At least one person was fooled! Maybe next time I’ll use a separate belt rather than the thin fabric-string belt. What will I think of next???

Shirt: Goodwill, $1 Thursday
Pants: Ross, hemmed
Earrings: Garage sale
Something about this shirt feels retro to me, I don’t know if it’s the color or the stripes or the neckline or what. When I wore it with polyester pants I felt like I had slipped back in time 30 years. Anybody who wasn’t a fetus and/or newborn in 1981 want to verify the accuracy of this impression?
