When I was a few years into my career, I attended a 3-day training course on Lean, a process improvement approach with an emphasis on minimizing waste. One of the things I remember most vividly about the seminar was what the trainer was wearing the first day: a lavender sweater set and dark trousers. I loved it. “A sweater set! I could get one of those! Yes! I’m going to do it!” I did not actually follow through and get a sleeveless shell with matching cardigan. I did, however, start buying cardigans and wearing them buttoned up and wearing them open and sometimes wearing them with a few buttons done, over an assortment of blouses and shirts and dresses and t-shirts.
The offsite training for three days in 2008 led me here, to this moment when I wear a cardigan to the office about half the time, and when my work responsibilities include process improvement. I’m currently working on replacing some of those cardigan appearances with blazers and jackets, to bump up the professional look a notch.
