My everywhere dress

What I Wore to Work Today: February 24, 2015
Dress: Macy’s
Belt: Target
Shoes: Payless
Earrings: Charming Charlie’s

The last time I posted a picture of the dress I said that I’ve worn it in many situations (work, dinner, party, concert, date, church) and it would make a nice wedding guest dress too. In January I attended a wedding and I did need wear this dress. Most of the afternoon and evening I added a blue cardigan.

Out of turn

What I Wore to Work Today: February 5, 2015
Cardigan: Target
Tshirt: Target
Pants: Goodwill
Shoes: Payless
Necklace: Target

This is posted out of turn, it should have been before the black & white squares dress, assuming I’m keeping it chronological.

I own two of these necklaces. It came with matching stud earrings and I lost one of the earrings so I bought another set. I realized I could shorten one necklace a little so wearing both at the same time would mean four separate visible strands. Add it to the list of things I could do at some point when I have the energy and motivation and time to look at the Things I Could Do list. Right now I’m just working on keeping my head above water.

Black and white squares

What I Wore to Work Today: February 9, 2015
Dress: Um, Macy’s? I don’t remember. Label says
Shoes: Payless

I wore this dress on a Monday when I was invited to a casual lunch meeting when our business line’s senior counsel and a new associate at our New York office were in town for a conference. My old manager was in attendance too, wearing a similar black and white jersey dress with draping and ruching at the waist. It felt like a nod of approval for my dress.

After debating since I first bought it, I think I will shorten this dress by an inch or two. With any luck I won’t have to hem it due to the synthetic jersey material and it will still look finished and clean.

Just clothes

What I Wore to Work Today: February 4, 2015
Tshirt: Target
Pants: Target, hemmed
Belt: Target
Shoes: Payless
Earrings: Charming Charlie’s

I felt ok wearing this boatneck top and my gray pants that are probably bigger than they should be but hey I like wearing wearing my pants loose. Then I tried to get a photo reflecting how I felt and it wouldn’t happen. The camera told me this outfit was decidedly not great and maybe kinda terrible. I considered skipping this day entirely in the blog. Here it is though.

In unrelated news, yesterday I bought two pairs of jeggings from American Eagle. Jeggings! Jeans leggings! Nobody can tell me these are too loose. (Untrue. Apparently I have no reference for how pants are supposed to fit and my sense of “my god these are painted on” is perceived by others as “your skinny jeans are kinda loose”. Stay tuned for more.)

Almost up to date!

What I Wore to Work Today: February 2, 2015
Shirt: Taken from a friend during her wardrobe clean-out
Skirt: Ann Taylor
Belt: Gift from a different friend
Shoes: Payless

Congratulations everybody, we made it through the stockpile and have caught up! It’s 2015! We made it! I started taking pictures again during these weeks when I was working my way through the old 2013 stuff, so once again I have a small backlog. No biggie, though, I’ve figured out a groove of editing photos and scheduling a week’s worth of posts at once. I don’t take a picture every day, so we’ll be all the way up to date before long.

Note the plant situation. The big planter still has basil, and new rosemary. The rosemary hasn’t died yet nor has it started growing. Still waiting to see what happens there. The smaller pot on the right side of the picture is impatiens that hasn’t bloomed since, oh, probably November, when the flowers were visible in the last post.

I didn’t remove my office badge before taking these pictures. I usually clip it on my pants pocket or skirt waistband. It needs to be visible but it’s not required to be above the waist; some people use lanyards, many attach it to belt loops using a retractable leash clip like mine, for easier badge access at the doors. This shirt has epaulette shoulder strap details that provided an excellent spot for the clip that avoids both clip-skin contact, which can be irritating, and the direct chest placement, which I prefer to avoid.

Happy birthday to me!

What I Wore to Work Today: November 4, 2014
Shirt: Goodwill, I think?
Skirt: Ann Taylor
Necklace: Charming Charlie’s
Shoes: Payless

I turned 33 on November 2. I don’t remember anything special about the day. Maybe I ate cake? Did a coworker insist on paying for me when we went to Pei Wei for lunch? I couldn’t tell you.

2014_11_04 watching hummingbird

Watching the hummingbirds. Well, hummingbird, singular. Only one gets to eat at my feeder because Anna’s Hummingbirds are territorial. If two show up at the same time somebody will get chased off. I don’t know how close is too close — I might put up a second feeder on the opposite corner and see if multiple birds are acceptable. They usually don’t mind the songbirds at the seed feeder. I know are at least 3 that come to my feeder every day, possibly many more, based on their obvious-to-me differences in appearance. I can recognize their sound now, announcing their arrival with a chee-chee-chee-chee.

After I learned that seed birds are greedy filthy little pigs, I only put out seed on the weekend, when I’m more likely to be able to see the birds come by. I’ve added a birdbath, which is just a terra cotta saucer with an inch or so of water. I haven’t seen anybody splashing around in it, yet, although I did witness a black bird drinking out of it. Maybe the bird bath will become more popular as the months heat up.

New office

2014_10_13What I Wore to Work Today: October 13, 2014
Shirt: Target
Skirt: Ann Taylor
Belt: Target
Belt: Target
Shoes: Payless

We moved to a new office building at the beginning of September. Our first day in the new building was the Day of the Floods that shut down much of metro Phoenix, so I actually worked from home on day one. The governor declares a state of emergency and asks that people stay home if possible? Will do.

The new office doubled my commute mileage and switched it from surface streets to highway. It’s against traffic, at least, and still a reasonable 20 minutes each way, door to desk. That estimate includes the 5 minutes of walking from my car to my cubicle. I start work at 9:00, so by the time I get there I’m parking at the edge of the lot next to the open fields, which is pretty neat. It will be less neat in a few months when it’s a thousand degrees… A parking garage structure is set to open sometime this year when two new buildings are finished, doubling our corporate center to around 5,000 employees. (I work for a big company.) That will still involve hiking across black asphalt to get to the car, but at least the vehicle will be covered instead of baking in the sun all day to bring the interior to a nice 145+ degrees. While many of you are eager for spring, we’re holding on to the last bit of winter.

Weird stinky jacket

2014_09_02 hands on hips

What I Wore to Work Today: September 2, 2014
Jacket: Goodwill, $1 Thursday refashioned
Tshirt: Target
Skirt: Ann Taylor
Belt: Target
Shoes: Payless

I bought this jacket from Goodwill for a dollar. I cut off the fringe on the lapel and the pockets. I wore it once and then sent it back to Goodwill because it turns out it had a weird smell and I wasn’t particularly fond of it even if it didn’t, you know, smell weird.

And yes, we jumped forward six months, you noticed that too! And I got a haircut in July. And I started seeing somebody who skateboards and left an old board on my balcony until I finally threw it away when it became clear that no, he wasn’t actually going to do something arty with that board and if he did want to do an art project he’d have another old board a month or two later anyway.

Triangles quilt for me

triangles quiltIn December 2013 I attended the holiday potluck meeting of the local chapter of Arizona Quilt Guild. I had a delightful evening and became a member in January 2014. I am definitely the youngest member by a noticeable margin. Most women are in the 55-70 range, with some older and few in their 40s. And yes, it is all women.

I attended the spring retreat at a little camp near Tucson in March and I loved it. There were 7 of us working on our projects all day, breaking for meals in the dining room. “Breakfast isn’t until 8:00 a.m., so you don’t even need to worry about an alarm,” one woman explained in total seriousness as I set up my workspace upon arrival. Ha. Hilarious. I set my alarm each morning and stumbled to breakfast, looking for coffee more than anything. I was always the last one in the sewing room, usually around 1 a.m.

I signed up for the fall retreat too, this time in Prescott. Only 4 of us ended up in attendance due to last-minute emergency cancellations, which gave me the loft sleeping area all to myself. I probably would have anyway because the others didn’t want to deal with the steep stairs. (Thank you, 32-year-old knees!) Once again, I was the last one up every night. This time I didn’t set my alarm until 10:00 though, to get a bit more sleep and relaxation out of the long weekend.

This is my fall retreat quilt, which I decided to keep for myself. The bright and bold triangles are all from scraps, while the white is actually several white-on-white prints up close. Note to self: take a close-up picture, post it later. I was inspired by the Flying Farfalle quilt I saw several years ago on the fabulous Film in the Fridge. Each square is 6×6 unfinished, with the scraps between 2.5×2.5 and 5×5. I knew when I was making it that I wanted to keep this one for myself. It’s impractical with the mix of white and bright colors. I love it.

The back is mostly an Ikea sheet-turned-curtains-turned-backing.

Turquoise and yellow baby quilt

kara quilt patio wall

I found these pictures on my computer from October 2012, a baby quilt I had forgotten that I made. I vaguely recalling being told they were doing a turquoise and yellow theme for their baby and I said “I can work with that!” The quilt is resting on the patio wall of the apartment below mine. It was the only nearby surface that would hold the quilt horizontally — I tried the pool fence gate and a nearby bush first — and I hoped the neighbors wouldn’t catch me at it. A rummage through the memory files confirms that I had ended a relationship a week or two before the pictures, meaning I didn’t have a quilt photo assistant handy.
