Doggie dinner station: Before & After
My dog is a sloppy drinker. She splashes water and doesn’t have the excuse of prodigious jowls or floofy ears getting in the way or youthful enthusiasm that cannot be restrained. She’s just messy.
More than a year after getting the little weasel I finally made a doggie dinner station placement using a piece of this home dec fabric roll I got at Goodwill. I also moved it to a dedicated spot in the dining room so it’s not directly next to the garbage and recycle anymore. Same floor, just different lighting for a different appearance.
Doggie Dinner is the magic phrase and soon she’ll probably learn “supper” too, which is what I say when I want to talk about dinner without drawing her attention.
Thunderstorms are scary
We had a rare thunderstorm in May — it’s usually one of the months with the least precipitation, second only to June. We also had rain in June this year, the first measurable rain in the first two weeks of the month since 1993 and the first measurable Phoenix rain ever on June 5. That leaves June 11 as the only remaining day without recorded precipitation over the years.
My dog did not appreciate the May storm. I was sitting on the living room floor doing something or other and she came to make her concerns known. She stared at me, she stared outside, she stared back at me. I declined to make the thunder stop happening so she settled in to watch the storm through the sliding doors from the safety of my lap.
Post-laundry pants
What I Wore to Work Today: April 6, 2015
Blouse: Loft, new
Pants: Banana Republic
Shoes: Payless
I keep wearing these tight pants to work, despite previous statements to the contrary, after I’ve worn them post-laundry once and they stretch just a bit during that time. Pretty sure that’s a sign I should not in fact be wearing them to the office.
I have pants that fit best right out of the laundry before they loosen and get saggy, and pants that are uncomfortably tight until they’ve stretched a little from their dryer time.
A world outside the balcony
What I Wore to Work Today: March 16, 2015
Blouse: Ann Taylor
Pants: Banana Republic, new
Shoes: Payless
I bought new pants that are ankle length, which I had always thought of as an ugly and unflattering style of pants. When I finally bought jeggings, joining the world of skinny pants just as hints of returning bootcut and flares and wideleg are in the air, I also bought some ankle-length pants. (I bought a bunch of things that week in a frenzy of spending.) After a couple wearings they were loose and a little, well, saggy, in the seat. They recently came out of the dryer truly legging tight and I realized I probably wouldn’t be wearing them to work again.
Hey look, a few pictures that aren’t on my balcony! I wrangled a photographer to take a few photos outside!
Fate of the beanie babies
What I Wore to Work Today: March 12, 2015
Blouse: Ann Taylor
Pants: Goodwill
Shoes: Payless
Last summer my mother mailed me a beanie baby she found, Ziggy the zebra date of birth 12-24-95, thinking my dog might enjoy playing with it. For some reason Asha doesn’t like it — she’ll chase it, start to pick it up, and then leave it. Something about the smell or or weight or texture, maybe? A different beanie baby gift this spring passes muster, Strut the chicken date of birth 3-8-96, so it’s a mystery.
Somebody carefully archived these two toys in mint condition, daydreaming about the piles of money they’d make one day on their investment. Twenty years later, these beanie babies are hanging out in a small dog’s toy basket, not even on the Top 5 Favorite Toys list. Bird then Chipmunk are in the lead by far, as you can see in the pictures below. Then Mousey, Duckfront, and a tie between Duckbutt and tennis balls. The original duck was too big to interest her so I cut and sewed it into two pieces. Edited to add: I found a Before picture of the poor duck on my phone!

Dog: Foster care with my mother
After almost a year since Kalayna died, I now have another dog. She has spent the last 9 months as a foster dog with my mom, who just flew down to deliver her. She’s probably around 3 years ago, 8 -9 pounds, and silly. She finds a lot of things scary, which will hopefully improve as she gets used to her new home and living with us. Her name with my mom has been Shaliah (aka Sh’Liiaa as I’ve been joking with a friend), and might or might not change. I used to say that I would name my next dog Riker, and I dunno, that doesn’t seem quite right for this one. I also thought I’d get a fresh puppy, and here is this adult dog with an unideal past.
Roxie, the downstairs neighbor Great Dane, is very interested.
My hair was curlier today than usual, even though I did my regular routine: wash it at night, sleep on it wet, get it kinda wet again in the morning, and brush.
I think I’m going to shorten the skirt by an inch or two.
Dog Week Continues
Approaching the end of Kalayna Week:
Did you meet Kalayna, whether 16 years ago as a puppy, recently in her old age, or somewhere in the middle? I’d love to hear stories about what you remember.
