Lots of casual Fridays

Blazer: Goodwill
Tshirt: Target
Jeans: American Eagle
Shoes: Payless, new

As I post these old pictures it seems like I was wearing jeans to work all the time last fall. The business casual dress code hasn’t changed at my office, I’m guessing that I was leaving work early enough for daylight pictures on Fridays, so the casual Friday jeans are overly represented. My jeggings (jeans that are stretchy and tight like leggings, wut!) still felt new and exciting and I was having fun wearing them out in public.

It took me years to get on board with the skinny jeans thing. I still don’t own any actual leggings. Or yoga pants. Give me another year and I’ll hop on board those trains too, just in time to be embarrassingly outdated.

These shoes look awesome and feel terrible.

Style Imitating Art – Aspens, Northern New Mexico

2016_01_22

Another Style Imitating Art post and it’s something I actually wore to work on Friday! Animated Cardigan chose this week’s piece: Aspens, Northern New Mexico by Ansel Adams.

Just the other day a style blog told me “You probably will look drab if your all black outfit consists of all cotton” and then I wore an all black cotton-based outfit anyway. For shame, self, for shame.

Self-timer

2015_06_12

What I Wore to Work Today: June 12, 2015
Jacket: Goodwill
Tshirt: Target
Jeans: American Eagle
Shoes: Payless

The majority of my clothing pictures are taken on my balcony with a self-timer that takes multiple shots at a time at 2 second intervals. Sometimes it takes a bit to balance the camera correctly and I don’t make it in time. I haven’t put much thought into a tripod or remote and the camera to go along with them, which seems like a lot of effort or expense for this type of casual blog. Upgrade one part and then everything else needs to get upgraded too. Sounds like a lot of work and I’m nothing if not lazy.

A lingering broom

Blouse: Goodwill, $1 Thursday
Pants: Limited
Shoes: Payless

While editing these pictures I noticed the broom tipped over against the wall. How long will it linger there, knocked over, before I finally pick it up?

In a Quiet Park

Songza is my favorite music source, both at home and at work. At home I often plug my laptop into speakers in my kitchen or in my sewing room (I’m pretty sure both sets of speakers were gifts/hand-me-downs from my brother over the years when he upgraded his own) if I’m not on the couch with my laptop on my actual lap. At work I regularly use headphones and the Songza app for music when I’m looking to focus or drown out the sounds of nearby cubicle-dwellers on conference calls.

I’ve explained Songza before, and I’m doing it again now. Songza opens with the Concierge, a page of 5 activities based on the time of day. Each activity shows 5 categories, and there are 3 playlists within each category. I’m pretty sure the system adjusts over time based on the user’s selections, showing more of the activities, categories, playlists that they select more often and based on songs they thumbs up.

This afternoon I chose activity Focusing (No Lyrics), then Focus-Enhancing Soundscapes category, then In a Quiet Park playlist. I haven’t tried any of their ambient sound non-music lists before. This one was mostly bird sounds and there might have been a stream in the distance. At first it seemed excessive (“my god there are so many birds!”) and within a few minutes it faded into the background as I adjusted and I did feel like I was relaxing outside on a lovely day.

The great Midwestern state of Wyoming

2015_05_19 hand on hip

The recent discussion of time zones made me think of two friends of mine. They both grew up in Southern California and are not good at geography, especially when it comes to anything east of the Sierra Nevadas and west of New York City. So, you know, most of the country. One of them is worse than the other, combining her general mapping deficiencies with the “California & select East Coast cities are the important parts of the U.S.” attitude.

She once mentioned Wyoming as being part of the Midwest. It’s not. In fact, part of Wyoming is farther west than our city in Arizona, and almost a third of the state is west of the eastern Arizona border. We’re in the same census region (4 total regions) and even the same division (9 subregions). If Wyoming is Midwest, does that mean New Mexico is part of the South?

When I wear this top I feel like I’m going to a fancy country barn dance. It’s got big gingham checks, it’s got tuxedo ruffles. I say “this is the last time, then I get rid of it”, and then I did. We all have habits, I guess.

Bare shoulders

2015_03_25What I Wore to Work Today: March 25, 2015
Top: Ross
Pants: Goodwill
Belt: Target
Shoes: Payless

My office dress code is business casual Monday-Thursday with more relaxed standards on Friday. Dressing full business is allowed at all times; when interacting with customers, vendors, or business partners outside the office it is expected to meet their minimum standard. Our corporate center has maybe 2,500 people now and will double in size when another two buildings open sometime in the next year. We all work for the same big company, representing a number of different business lines with varying policies and dress codes. I regularly see people in other areas in patterned leggings-as-pants, cargo pants, running shoes, flip-flops, casual t-shirts. Sometimes I see people in suits and the occasional man in a tie.

My group of maybe 150 people covers half of one floor. We have a program in place to “buy” casual days; the proceeds go to the designated charity of the quarter. For $1/day, I could follow casual Friday guidelines instead of business casual Mon-Thu guidelines. I haven’t done this in over a year, though, I like dressing up a little.

Our version of business casual is fairly relaxed, and probably includes some accommodations for the climate. (Climate: surface of the sun.) Bare shoulders are fine in a top like this that doesn’t have spaghetti straps and doesn’t show undergarments. I often wear a cardigan or jacket anyway, and I keep a black cardigan in my desk for air conditioning temperature fluctuations. Bare legs are fine with skirts and dresses, no panythose or tights required. Open-toed shoes are fine; I stick to peep-toes with some coverage rather than full-on strappy sandals.

I don’t remember if the differences in typical men’s and women’s fashions are written into the dress code or not. The company is big on issues of diversity and inclusion and avoiding discrimination, so in some ways I’d be surprised if it said “women are allowed to wear this, men are not”.

Can you show bare shoulders in your office? Even if it isn’t against policy, how do you feel about wearing something sleeveless or open-toed?
