Hockey is back! The first regular season game was/is October 3 against the Vancouver Canucks. I’m listening to the game as I type this on Thursday night, so it’s like time travel that this post isn’t going live until Saturday. Don’t tell me if the Sharks win/won, I want to be surprised.

Hockey lockout

Dress: Goodwill, $1 Thursday

Belt: Gift from Sarah

You know what I’m not doing while typing this post? Listening to a hockey game. Because the first several weeks of the NHL season have been officially canceled. There’s a lockout and when I last checked a resolution was not yet in sight. I guess it’s time to start following another sport. The Arizona Cardinals are doing quite well so far, losing their first game to the Rams after starting 4-0. The part I’m having trouble figuring out is how they can skate on the grass.

Sharks vacation!

Sharks! Nov 11 2009

And I’m back!  I went to San Jose for a birthday vacation and two Sharks games.  We saw the Sharks beat the Penguins 5-0 on Saturday night, then a 4-3 winning game against Nashville on Tuesday.  On Wednesday we were walking around downtown Los Gatos, which is a pretty, upscale town of about 30,000 and happened to see some Sharks players.  We were behind two of them in line at a coffee shop and then passed a couple more outside a little while later.  After some debate, we decided that we would ask if we could take a picture, since we had flown in from Arizona just to see their game against Pittsburgh, and it was a group of younger players so maybe they weren’t tired of being hounded by fans yet.  They generously agreed to a picture, wrangled together by 3rd-year veteran Setoguchi on the left.  (And he’s still only 22, man I’m getting old.)

Earlier that day I had considered putting on make-up and generally making myself presentable.  “But then, why would I care about looking nice just to take a walk into town?” I said.  Why indeed…

Hockey pajama pants

Hockey pajama pants

Here are the pants I made as a birthday gift a month ago.  He’s been wearing them frequently, even when we hit the record for 113 degrees last week, so I think he likes them.  They’re made of a very soft flannel.  I started with Simplicity 9871 although I didn’t follow the pattern very closely, which seemed to work out fine for something this basic.   I accidentally cut one of the pieces reversed, and sewed gigantic seam allowances when I realized the pants were huge around the hips and would come up to his ribcage.  (See how high they’re wearing them in the picture??)  Also, I don’t know how to use my machine’s buttonholer yet so I inserted the tie on the inside, and then used a piece of ribbon because I didn’t want to deal with making a matching fabric drawstring.  He’s confident and doesn’t feel threatened by the cream satin ribbon holding up his 9-year-old-boy pjs.
