Style Imitating Art: The Homecoming

The Style Imitating Art choice this week from Librarian for Life and Style is a woodcut print by Bertha Lum called The Homecoming, likely an initial print for other pieces that year. In addition to the simplicity and vertical lines of my clothing, I included the top of the garage door frame to recreate the frame in the image and my shadow as stand-in for the reflection.

Painting clothes

2015_03_20What I Wore to Work Today: March 20, 2015
Shirt: Goodwill, taken in
Pants: Target, hemmed
Shoes: Target

When I was growing up I always had a set of painting clothes: an old shirt and maybe a pair of pants that would be worn while painting because the paint splatters wouldn’t matter. This doesn’t make sense to me anymore. How often was I repainting stuff? Did my family really need designated painting clothes? Was it just the pull of hoarding, keeping a perfectly good shirt for painting instead of turning it into rags or even, god forbid, putting it in the garbage?

I wore this shirt while painting chairs several years ago and splattered dark gray paint on the sleeve. The paint is still there, hidden when the sleeves are rolled, and here I am wearing it to work on a Friday.

Making progress – October is here!

What I Wore to Work Today: October 1, 2013
Shirt: Taken during a friend’s closet cleanout
Pants: Goodwill, refashioned

These pants are gone and the shirt is going in the giveaway basket when it comes out of the laundry. I like how it looks but when I wore this week (this week in real time, not still-2013-picture-time) the metallic threads irritated my skin. Maybe somebody else won’t experience the same sensitivity.

Stay strong, friends, we’re making progress! We’ve made it to October, a new month! Eventually we’ll be looking at 2014 pictures and then finally, god willing, 2015!! I am going to start mixing in quilt pictures too, because I transferred photos from my camera and found the stack of finished quilt pictures. I forgot that my assistant gamely spent 20 minutes holding quilt after quilt so I could start sending them off. Which I did for a few. But, uh, there are definitely 6 quilts folded neatly on my dining table right now. Hey, at least they’re folded. They were in a messy stack for the few months before that.

2015 has been about taking care of little tasks that have been waiting for a long time. Pretty soon I’ll be at a point when I can make decisions about the direction of this blog, which has a devoted readership of at least one person (hi Mom!). Also, maybe I can figure out why some of the pictures aren’t showing up Feedly. (Googler Reader, still missing you…) Until then, we’re working through the backlog.

Questionable choice

What I Wore to Work Today: July 7, 2013
Dress: Target, shortened
Belt: Target
Shoes: Payless

We all make choices that we look back on and say “You know, I wouldn’t make that same choice again”. This picture is one of those choices for me. I can’t say I would wear this dress with that belt and those shoes again. Shortening the dress a few inches? That decision I stand by.

This was my half-birthday! 31 1/2! Yee-ha! Six months from then, and several weeks from now, I turn 32. Yep. If I’ve learned anything from the internet, it’s a special, special age.

Hockey is back! The first regular season game was/is October 3 against the Vancouver Canucks. I’m listening to the game as I type this on Thursday night, so it’s like time travel that this post isn’t going live until Saturday. Don’t tell me if the Sharks win/won, I want to be surprised.

Dead basil

Oh hey, the sunlight on the balcony means this was taken in the morning before work. That was ambitious of me.

The ol’ dead basil planter. Looks like I still had it there in April. I have since moved it, pulled the dead plants out, and have plans to put a not-dead plant in it any day now. Yep, any day now…

Are you my mother?

What I Wore to Work Today: April 22, 2013
Blouse: Target, sides slimmed
Skirt: $1 Goodwill, refashioned
Belt: Gift from Sarah
Shoes: Walmart. (Yes, I know.)

Let’s take a quick poll, which is a new button since I re-started blogging and I should give it a try. I’ve been back, what, only four days now? And Google Reader’s passing in July surely decreased the blog time of others as well, yes? So, the question: Are you, the person reading this right now, my mother?

Great closet in the sky

What I Wore to Work Today: April 17, 2013
Tshirt: Target
Skirt: Gift from Sarah, refashioned
Belt: Target
Shoes: Target

In September I cleared out a significant portion of my wardrobe and excess stuff lying around, hidden in boxes or behind closet doors or under piles of other stuff. I started a new job the day after Labor Day and I decided I wanted to take the opportunity to spruce up my wardrobe a little. This skirt was among the items that was given to a very nice family on a farm with lots of space to run around.

When we get to more current pictures, there will be some new pieces too. I went shopping and spent more on a dress than I ever have except for prom and bridesmaid dresses. From Ann Taylor! Like a real financial services industry professional!

I have two hours until the deadline for a short essay on why Microsoft Project 2010  is an excellent tool for meeting project goals for a new class I’m taking on Microsoft Project. The actual writing, editing, and submitting of this essay will 20 minutes maybe, and even though it’s a minor commitment here I am posting a few backlogged photos to Rabbit Style News instead because it seems like an insurmountable task. Both are on my To Do List, so either way I’ll get to cross off something.
