More professional than a free tote bag

Bag: Target, new

I finally bought a professional bag for work that’s big enough to hold my laptop. Occasionally I bring my computer home to work remotely or to have on hand in case of “business continuity protocol” issues like the floods last September that prevented a lot of people from making it to the office, and I used an old tote bag. I’m pretty sure it came free with a subscription to Lucky magazine in something like 2007, or maybe it was Domino (RIP [oh wait I just learned that it relaunched in 2013 after a four-year hiatus]). Anyway, this tote bag was just something I happened to have lying around when I needed to tote my laptop home one day. Ha ha, tote. I regret nothing.

So I finally bought myself a nicer bag, something that can hold my laptop and also looks reasonable as a purse-without-a-laptop, at least I think it’s reasonable. I don’t have experience with bigger bags and I can’t really tell. I’ll probably want to buy an actual laptop bag if I ever get to go on business trips, something with a little padding and more comfortable carrying straps and all. For now, though, this new bag does the trick.

Real live people

What I Wore to Work Today: April 13, 2015
Blouse: Ann Taylor, new
Tank top: Target
Pants: Ann Taylor
Belt: Target
Shoes: Payless

I think this is this blouse’s first appearance on the blog, I’m not sure. I know the first time I wore it I didn’t get an outfit picture because I went to an Arizona blogger meetup directly from work and didn’t get home until after dark. Is that irony, missing a blog post opportunity because I was at a blogger thing?

I recognized one of the organizers from her blog, Freckles in April. It reminded me of the time I bought tickets to a hockey game with seats in the section behind the Sharks bench. I was close enough to see their faces and suddenly they were in front of me as actual people, real humans right there living their lives as professional hockey players. It was weird. They were people. (I didn’t talk to the woman from that blog, we never even made eye contact.)

Post-laundry pants

I keep wearing these tight pants to work, despite previous statements to the contrary, after I’ve worn them post-laundry once and they stretch just a bit during that time. Pretty sure that’s a sign I should not in fact be wearing them to the office.

I have pants that fit best right out of the laundry before they loosen and get saggy, and pants that are uncomfortably tight until they’ve stretched a little from their dryer time.

Jeggings (!!!)

2015_03_30 working from home

What I Wore to Work From Home Today:
Tank top: Target
Jeggings: American Eagle, new

I get to work from home once a month or so. The original plan was to be remote 1-2 days a week, I’ve cut it back because it’s nice to have two full monitors and a mouse instead of a laptop with a touchpad. Also, I’ve been facing some motivation challenges and it’s easier these days to stay on track when I’m in my cubicle. I’m remote when there’s a specific need, like an appointment or migraine issues. This day I was at home so my car could go get new tires.

I’ve been a steadfast bootcut pants and flare (flare!) supporter since high school. I finally bought a pair of skinny jeans from Target several months ago, under some duress.

These American Eagle jeggings kept showing up in my feed. A Pretty Penny has stocked up with multiple pairs. The low-rise version was seen on Camp Patton.

So I said ok, I will buy some, time to venture into new territory.

First, I couldn’t find the store in the mall directory. Eventually I located it under the Teen Apparel category. Good start. “The bloggers recommending these pants are not teens, they’re 30ish women too!” I insisted to my shopping companion. Then, the store was playing music from 2002-2010. We can’t possibly be targeting the ’00s as a style reference already, can we? It still feels weird to me to see all the ’90s styles that have been coming back around, worn by people who don’t remember them the first time.

I’ve been enjoying the jeggings so far, in blue and also black. They’re comfortable.

Hey look it’s another day of work clothes, this time regular office attire. Doubling up until I’m back to the present, at which point maybe I’ll start writing again.

I started the What I Wore to Work Today feature of this blog in 2006, before I saw the whole style blog thing elsewhere. Twitter was in its infancy, Facebook had just opened its doors to the wider public a couple months before, and Instagram wouldn’t be a twinkle in its creators’ eyes for several more years. My first post includes pants and tshirt that I still wear, even though many early entries have a certain cringe-worthy factor. It’s not far enough in the past to smile with nostalgia, and there’s still a lot I would definitely not wear now. Which makes sense, I suppose, considering the differences a decade can make in terms of financial resources, fashion trends, age, job expectations, career development, body comfort and confidence…

At some point in my WIWTWT journey I began including notes on my clothing sources. Not the exact brands or links to items for ordering online, just an explanation of how it came into my wardrobe (ex.: “Goodwill” instead of “Express via Goodwill”). It didn’t occur to me to establish a system for guiding readers to the exact piece of clothing if they wanted to buy it for themselves, not expecting many readers and certainly not many who wanted to snag some of my style. It seems reasonable to keep the same system for now unless I love something and want to evangelize. Change is hard. Heck, I haven’t changed anything about the WordPress template since original creation, even though putting a little work into building a better website would be beneficial for everybody. I’d like a search function for myself if nothing else. One day…

I wore a dress with bits of green to make up for forgetting St. Patrick’s Day the day before.

This isn’t green

I passed a woman in a kelly green shirt on the way to coffee. “What a beautiful color, a little out of the ordinary for her, doesn’t she usually wear a lot of neutrals?” I thought. Behind her was another woman in green. “And look, the next person is also wearing green, what are the odds!” A minute later there’s a man in a green plaid shirt putting something in the fridge. “Oh my god it’s St. Patrick’s Day.”

I wasn’t wearing any green, anywhere. All those people participating in a fun little tradition and there I was in my stupid brown tweed skirt and my stupid new black bow-neck blouse and my stupid new black pumps.

A world outside the balcony

2015_03_16 asha tongueWhat I Wore to Work Today: March 16, 2015
Blouse: Ann Taylor
Pants: Banana Republic, new
Shoes: Payless

I bought new pants that are ankle length, which I had always thought of as an ugly and unflattering style of pants. When I finally bought jeggings, joining the world of skinny pants just as hints of returning bootcut and flares and wideleg are in the air, I also bought some ankle-length pants. (I bought a bunch of things that week in a frenzy of spending.) After a couple wearings they were loose and a little, well, saggy, in the seat. They recently came out of the dryer truly legging tight and I realized I probably wouldn’t be wearing them to work again.

Hey look, a few pictures that aren’t on my balcony! I wrangled a photographer to take a few photos outside!

Accidentally sheer

What I Wore to Work Today: March 9, 2015
Top: Ann Taylor, new
Pants: Ann Taylor
Belt: Target
Shoes: Payless

I learned that this t-shirt with a pleated section on the front turns somewhat sheer under a flash. I can see why celebrity pictures sometimes make it look like they’re wearing a see-through top, when in fact it was just lights of the red carpet or the aggressive paparazzi flashbulbs and the person (usually a woman) was wearing something that was not sheer in real life. That happened with this new top. I darkened the photo a little which hid the cool pleating details and revealed some spots on the lens.

When I wear this shirt to work in the future, I will also wear a tank top underneath it. In case it’s actually kinda sheer all the time and I didn’t realize it.
