Style Imitating Art: Coffee Cup by Kelly Jo

2017_09_11 SIA

What I Wore to Work Today: Monday, September 11, 2017
Blouse: Target, new
Pants: Limited
Shoes: Payless
Necklace: Hand-me-down from a friend

Loop Looks selected the latest Style Imitating Art piece, a painting by Kelly Jo with GrowARTS at Garden Center Services in Chicago. One of my new blouses from Target is a slightly darker version of the background color in the painting, so I wore it on my first day back after a week vacation at home. With the poor lighting in the photo space, I “enhanced” the picture in an attempt to get the blouse color closer to the way it looks in real life. Results are… adequate, let’s say.

Drinking coffee is my favorite part of starting the day (caffeine addiction!). I drink it over ice with milk, and this painting makes me want to drink it in a classy white cup with saucer instead. Maybe when it’s not 106 degrees I’ll drink hot coffee on the patio. A few more days and then highs will drop to double digits! We made it! Good work everyone!

Style Imitating Art: Venus Tourism Poster

What I Wore to Work Today: Thursday, May 18, 2017
Blouse: Express, new
Pants: Target
Shoes: Payless

14 Shades of Grey selected this Venus space tourism poster as the latest inspiration piece for Style Imitating Art. I don’t own any peach, blush, pale pink, or anything similar, so I wore a new ivory blouse, gray trousers, and beige pumps.

I didn’t take a picture while wearing this outfit to the office last week, so I put it on my dress form for a photo with the geometric/star-shaped-for-space-travel quilt blocks in the background. The dress form is decorative, and it’s also in the general ballpark of my size so I can use it with some of my clothes. If I ever get really into making pants I’ll need to buy a mannequin with legs — the stand-down-one-pant leg thing doesn’t really work.

Style Imitating Art: O’Keeffe, Pond in the Woods

2017_02_09 SIA collage.jpg

What I Wore to Work Today: Thursday, February 9, 2017
Blouse: Loft
Pants: Old Navy
Necklace: Charming Charlie’s
Shoes: Payless

The Style Imitating Art inspiration piece selected by Loop Looks is Pond in the Woods by Georgia O’Keeffe. I chose this teal blouse, navy blue velvet pants, and navy fake-suede heels. I added a necklace with more teal and navy in slightly shades and round bubble shapes to echo the lines of the painting.

Teal, navy blue, and black are three of the main colors in my wardrobe and around my house, and I have a lot of green plants. The background of this photo works with the painting, which wasn’t planned.

Style Imitating Art: Lace design woodcuts by Parasole

What I Wore to Work Today: Tuesday, January 10, 2017
Jacket: TJ Maxx (maybe? It was in 2012)
Blouse: Target
Skirt: Limited, rest in peace
Shoes: Target

Librarian for Life and Style chose her first inspiration artwork of the year: lace design manual woodcuts by Isabella Catanea Parasole (1565-1625). Click through to check out many more images of the artists work at the Met!

I happened to wear this old lace jacket blazer thing earlier in the month and I had even taken a glamorous office bathroom mirror picture to show a few friends who were with me when I bought it at a TJ Maxx or similar store on vacation in Park City, UT several years ago.  I recreated the outfit for my art interpretation. 2017_01_30-jan-10-pic

I attempted a better mirror picture when I remembered the deadline last minute and that was my only option. After the photo I realized the gray and white blocks on my quilt design board behind me are a subtle nod to the needlework design manual that the inspiration art was pulled from.

And hey look, this is my 1000th post! Maybe this can make up for missing 100,000 miles on my car. I noticed it with two miles to go, forgot within seconds, and looked again at 100,002.

Style Imitating Art: 1909 Vogue Cover

What I Wore to Work Today: Wednesday, October 26, 2016
Dress: Target, new
Belt & Necklace: Target
Shoes: Payless

Librarian For Life & Style chose a Vogue magazine cover from November 1909 as the inspiration piece for Style Imitating Art. I wore  my new gray dress for a classy feel, adding black accessories and a necklace with round rhinestones as a nod to the peacock feather eyes.

I ordered this dress in both gray and black with the plan to keep whichever I liked better. I ended up keeping both — I figured at $23 each during a sale, it was worth it.

Style Imitating Art: Brummel street mural

This week’s Style Imitating Art inspiration piece is a street mural known as Brummel by the artist POSE, selected for SIA by Loop Looks. I immediately thought of this piece I made at a quilt retreat last year. Using the Crazy Mom Quilts tutorial, it was my first attempt at improv piecing with scraps. While I like what I made, I’m not interested in continuing with it enough to make into even a lap size quilt (so much work and time!), and I can say with confidence that I will never make a king size masterpiece like her Scrap Vortex quilt.

The piece has been on my design wall since I made it, waiting for me to figure out what to do with it. One possible plan is to turn it into an apron. I wear an apron every time I’m in the kitchen cooking, baking, or cleaning and I would definitely use another one in my collection. I didn’t get around to sewing the apron this week, so I mocked it up using safety pins and a length of ribbon as the waistband for my Domestic Style Imitating Art interpretation.

Style Imitating Art: The Great Wave Off Kanagawa

What I Wore To Work Today: Friday, September 2, 2016
Blouse: Ann Taylor
Tank top: Target
Jeans: American Eagle
Shoes: Adidas Energy Boost ESM2

The Style Imitating Art inspiration comes from 14 Shades of Grey, who selected Hokusai’s The Great Wave Off Kanagawa, aka Under the Wave off Kanagawa, aka The Great Wave. She mentioned the dots of spray as a possible jumping off point, which is what I went with for my casual Friday office-closing-early-for-the-holiday-weekend interpretation. I added a blue tank top under the semi-sheer blouse, jeans, and my navy-and-white running shoes because the laces and Adidas logo reminded me of the whitecap stripes on the waves.

Style Imitating Art: The Door Within

2016_08_16 SIA

What I Wore to Work Today: August 16, 2016
Dress: Macy’s, maybe?
Shoes: Payless

Loop Looks selected the Style Imitating Art piece this round: a painting she rescued from a dumpster, identified on the back as “The Door Within” by Jean Fetman. It’s a cool story, so read the details on her blog post.

Right away I thought of this dress, with the right colors and the brush-stroke abstract print. And hey, the garage door in the background is an accidental reference to the work’s title. I wore it to the office on Tuesday and then took pictures on Sunday minutes before a dust storm rolled in, as you can see in the bottom picture.2016_08_16 SIA art

Style Imitating Art: Una and the Lion

2016_08_02 SIA patio

What I Wore to Work Today: August 2, 2016
Cardigan, Sleeveless Top, Necklace, Belt: Target
Pants: Limited
Shoes: Payless

Librarian for Life and Style selected this week’s piece, Una and the Lion by Briton Rivière. I find it interesting that the background trees looked much darker on whatever devices I viewed it on while coming up with ideas, resulting in the black foundation pieces of my interpretation. Just as well, I don’t have much (any?) brown, russet, dark olive green, etc. in my wardrobe.

I tried to get my dog in the picture to play the role of powerful lion or frolicking lamb and she was having none of it, disappearing back through the dog door.

Style Imitating Art: The Homecoming

What I Work to Work Today: Thursday, June 23, 2016
Shirt: Ann Taylor
Pants: Gap
Shoes: Payless

The Style Imitating Art choice this week from Librarian for Life and Style is a woodcut print by Bertha Lum called The Homecoming, likely an initial print for other pieces that year. In addition to the simplicity and vertical lines of my clothing, I included the top of the garage door frame to recreate the frame in the image and my shadow as stand-in for the reflection.
