Back in the fall

Here I am wearing clothes to work some more. I wear clothes every day that I go to work. Sucker for routine, I guess.

September styles

And now we’re on to September, when I had moved into my house and hadn’t decided on a spot for pictures yet. At my apartment the balcony ledge was the perfect height and distance from the wall for self-timed photos. At my house I’ve been using the recycling bin as a tripod so far.

Style Imitating Art – Aspens, Northern New Mexico

2016_01_22

Another Style Imitating Art post and it’s something I actually wore to work on Friday! Animated Cardigan chose this week’s piece: Aspens, Northern New Mexico by Ansel Adams.

Just the other day a style blog told me “You probably will look drab if your all black outfit consists of all cotton” and then I wore an all black cotton-based outfit anyway. For shame, self, for shame.

A whole new year!

Oh look it’s suddenly 2016 and I’m back in the ol’ blogarooni and WordPress is all different stuff again. I’ll figure it out later, as I always say…

It’s a whole new year, a brand new world.

My middle school was two houses away from my grandparents’ house and I went through a phase of walking over after school and hanging out for awhile. I’d read the paper, talk to Grandma and Grandpa, eat snacks, tinker on the piano from an old hymnal. (Grandma and Grandpa, did you guys buy a hymnal or did you just… borrow one from the church??) I got to the point where I could play my grandfather’s favorite hymn, “God of Grace and God of Glory”, including all the chords on both hands. I’ve always had big hands for somebody my size and enjoyed reaching the bigger chords. (Aww, that post from October 2010 hints at the clearly-absurd idea I had had at some point that maybe I’d get married in September 2011. Haha that’s cute. Marriage isn’t in your future, my young friend.)

When I was in a particularly cheerful mood I’d sing little songs in the tiny bathroom on the opposite side of the living room wall, often A Whole New World from “Aladdin”, or the hymns I was playing earlier. I later learned that the bathroom was not soundproof — why did I ever think it was?? — and I was retroactively mortified about all my bathroom singing. If my grandparents heard me they were polite enough, kind enough, to refrain from letting on.

It’s a new year and I’ll start it by throwing old photos on the blog.

34!

2015_10_23

Happy 34th birthday to me! Now that 34 sounds even older than 33 (it’s almost into the next age bracket of 35-55 on surveys!), I’ll get to enjoy even more conversations like this one at the fabric store cutting counter last week:

Me: 1 yard of these two, and half a yard of the batiks, please.
50-something Clerk: Ok. What are you working on?
Me: A project with my quilt guild.
Clerk: [pause] So you’re learning to quilt, huh?
Me: Well, not really, I’ve been doing it about 8 years. I do consider myself a beginner, though, definitely not an expert or anything.
Clerk: You must have been really small when you started then!
Me: I was in my mid-twenties.
Clerk: Oh! I thought you were still in your teens!

My new response when somebody tells me that I look 15, or they thought I was 23, or there’s no way I’m 34 haha stop lying now tell us your real age for real this time, is going to be silence. Nothing. I’m not agreeing with them (“Haha I know”) or apologizing (“Yeah, I’m sorry, everybody says that”) or pretending like they’re the first person to say it (“what?? that’s weird, everybody always thinks I’m older than my age”) or responding as though it’s a compliment, which can go on awhile (“thank you, that’s so kind of you to say!” “You really do though!” “How nice, thank you!” “No, I’m not trying to be nice, I really thought you were in college” “Aw, thank you, I’m flattered!” “I’m not trying to flatter you, I’m just saying the truth, you look really young” “You’re too sweet, thank you!”).

Instead, it will be nothing.
“Oh my god no way I thought you were 20!”
“….”

Happy birthday to me!

Time for a haircut?

I’ve started pulling my hair up a lot, partly because of the heat. Again, we’re all fools for living here. This sort of climate is not suited to support 4 million people in a two-county metro area. I was one of the almost-a-million people who moved here between April 2000 and April 2010. (I arrived in not-quite-triumph August 11, 2004, after getting into a car accident in Bernalillo, NM that totaled my car, a beautiful 1991 Ford Taurus that I had owned for a week. Welcome to post-college life!)

Am I doing anything about the obvious folly of living here? Am I, perhaps, moving to a more sustainable area? Maybe a state with water? Haha, no, thanks for the offer but I’m going about 3 miles down the street if all goes well.

Hemming decisions

These are my new go-to work pants.I haven’t decided what to do about the hem yet. They’re folded under here and stayed put throughout the day. The next time they show up here they’ll be full-length. I could leave them as-is and fold/not fold on a case-by-case basis. I could buy a second pair and hem one and leave the other. I could hem them halfway between the two options. Anything could happen.

What a fine weekend

2015_06_15 bent knee

What I Wore to Work Today: June 15, 2015
Blouse: Limited, new

This has been a top-notch weekend. Friday started with a 15-second commute to my couch, where I logged in remotely. My inbox had a message from the Pride diversity group about the SCOTUS marriage equality ruling and I said out loud to my dog “Oh wow awesome!” After doing a few work things I woke up my boyfriend saying “Hey guess what the Supreme Court issued their ruling striking down gay marriage bans, it was a 5-4 decision.” He agreed it was fantastic news and then I let him go back to sleep while I returned to work.

Friday night I went to a cool bar in Phoenix with friends to hear my brother mix music.

Saturday afternoon I went to the eye doctor for the first time in 3 years. As I suspected, my left eye prescription has clicked up a few notches plus added astigmatism. The left toric contact lens wasn’t settling in correctly while at the office — it has different strengths across different parts of the lens, so if it’s not oriented correctly on the eyeball then vision isn’t clear. There’s a tiny weight difference at the bottom acting as ballast to help it reorient with each blink. We agreed I should try the pair for a few days and return for a follow-up if it wasn’t working. Within an hour my vision had cleared; it felt like the lens had molded to my eyeball shape or rotated over time and was now correctly placed. Today the left contact started blurry and settled within a few minutes of putting it in. I can return to using contacts again!

I’m also buying new glasses, and replacing the left lens in my existing frames. Right now my primary glasses get 90% of the work, even though I have two other pairs. If they all get current prescriptions and the arms of one pair are adjusted to fit better, I will have a whole wardrobe of vision correction options!

Saturday night I went to a show at my improv theater. I rarely see shows anymore when I’m not playing in them or working the bar and it was neat to be a regular audience member. (Well, not quite regular, I sat in the back row and didn’t shout out any suggestions.) I was wearing a drapey black v-neck, skinny jeans, black pumps, earrings, my hair pulled up, and even a little bit of makeup. I received a number of comments on my shoes (“oooh hot heels”) and my appearance in general (“Look at you, do you have a date? You look great!”). They’re used to seeing me in my relaxed theater clothes, like casual jeans and tshirts at rehearsal and the unflattering uniform at shows, and always sneakers.

Today I’m posting blog stuff (hello!), putting away dishes, vacuuming (love my new vacuum!), sewing, and doing a bit of office work while watching America’s Next Top Model cycle 12. I just found a couple new-to-me seasons on Hulu and I’m blasting through them before I cancel my HuluPlus account.

Overall: what a fine weekend indeed.

Self-timer

2015_06_12

What I Wore to Work Today: June 12, 2015
Jacket: Goodwill
Tshirt: Target
Jeans: American Eagle
Shoes: Payless

The majority of my clothing pictures are taken on my balcony with a self-timer that takes multiple shots at a time at 2 second intervals. Sometimes it takes a bit to balance the camera correctly and I don’t make it in time. I haven’t put much thought into a tripod or remote and the camera to go along with them, which seems like a lot of effort or expense for this type of casual blog. Upgrade one part and then everything else needs to get upgraded too. Sounds like a lot of work and I’m nothing if not lazy.
